The Hunt Is On Again

Loosely based on the 1924 short story The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell, the film follows 12 strangers who mysteriously wake up in a clearing. They do not know where they are or how they got there. They discover that they have been chosen to be hunted in a game devised by a group of elites. The hunters gather in a remote facility called the Manor House, but their sport gets derailed when one of the hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin), fights back and starts killing them one by one.

Call me among the many people who were looking forward to seeing Craig Zobel's Action/Thriller The Hunt in 2019. Due to political reasons, mostly people thinking that with the shootings that were happening around the time of the marketing and release, this Blumhouse production was shelved. Then a new trailer was released in 2020 and a new date was issued. Originally it was personal politics that kept this movie from the silver screen. With the country growing ever more polarized, the assumption was that this was a movie about gun crazy conservatives hunting liberals. The plot is actually the reverse with liberal elites played by people like Hillary Swank, are the ones who will be doing the hunting in a situation that reminds me a little of the film Get Out.

When I wrote about this movie getting taken off of its release I always felt that it would still resurface. Maybe not the in theaters but definitely on a streaming service just like what happened to the Seth Rogan comedy The Interview. I do not expect this to be a blockbuster hit but if Blumhouse has proven anything it's that it is good at making profitable horror and thrillers on modest budgets. I am not betting against this film but the marketing of this film is not up to par. There are a few commercials here and there but I think that Blumhouse is playing it too safe probably due to the current events of the election or the looming possibility of another mass shooting.

There will be screening and review of this film and I am hoping that it is a great time at the movies. I am a growing fan of Betty Gilpin and look forward to seeing her work. The gut feeling is that I will enjoy this film. I want to know who else is looking forward to this movie. Share your thoughts. The Hunt is on March 23, 2020.
